Spatial Computing & Capture

Spatial computing is a 3D-centric form of computing that merges digital data with the physical world in real time, allowing users to interact with computers using natural gestures, voice, and eye tracking rather than traditional 2D screens.
It is an umbrella term encompassing technologies like augmented reality (AR)virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR), which blend virtual experiences into physical environments to create immersive, context-aware interactions. Spatial capture also makes it possible to create realistic and immersive digital environments quickly and affordably with any camera, smartphone or small drone.

The New 3D Pixels

One of the biggest breakthroughs in 3D scanning in recent years are a new form of 3D “pixel” technology that dramatically improves realism and processing times. These are called 3D Gaussian Splats (3DGS).

Alongside 3DGS, there are traditional capture methods for creating 3D models, including:

  • Photogrammetry — reconstructing 3D environments from overlapping photographs.
  • LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) — using laser-based depth scanning for highly accurate spatial data.

Each technique offers unique advantages depending on the project, environment and level of detail required.

AI and the Future of 3D

AI-assisted workflows can now generate environments from text prompts, reconstruct detailed geometry from video and dramatically speed up rendering processes that once took days, weeks and in some cases months to complete.

A medieval street in the city of Wells, Somerset captured using 3D Gaussian Splats

A five-minute scan today can recreate an entire street with astonishing realism using Gaussian Splats.

Mapping platforms are already shifting from flat and spherical 360 imagery toward fully navigable 3D environments with six degrees of freedom (6DoF).

We are moving from viewing the world to experiencing it spatially — and that shift is only just beginning. If you would like a demonstration of my 3D scanning services to promote your business or service then please be in touch.
